The Great Southern California ShakeOut / Golden Guardian 2008


At 10 AM on November 13, 2008 millions of Southern Californians will participate in The Great Southern California ShakeOut ... the largest earthquake prepardness exercise in U.S. history.

As a Southern Californian, I am happy that everyone is taking the initiative to go through this excercise. I think they are learning a lot of things by doing this that will help them to be proactive in solving problems that arise from a real earthquake of this magnitude.

There is a really good video news story on the internet from yesterday's Shake Out press conference where one of the Professors involved in Shake Out talks about how the water pipes across So. California will burst if we have an earthquake this big. There aren't enough pipes available in the world right now to fix this. If this were to happen today it would take 6 months for water service to be fully restored in Southern California. That would be truly disasterous! As a result of Shake Out, the water companies have realized this and are working on a solution ahead of time so that if this does happen, they will have a good plan to restore water service to everyone.
