Guidelines for the Implementation of Essential Facilities Risk Assessments Using HAZUS-MH

FEMA sponsored a pilot project to perform a risk assessment of essential facilities using HAZUS-MH. HAZUS.org believes that this project is the new "GOLD STANDARD" on how to to perform a community HAZUS risk assessment.

The objective of the pilot project was to demonstrate the synergy between HAZUS-MH and FEMA’s Map Modernization program. The project addressed three Southern California counties - Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino.

Two different earthquakes and three different riverine floods were studied for each county’s infrastructure. In addition, the impact of a tsunami hitting the Orange County coastline was examined. The results of these risk assessments are documented in three separate reports.

Perhaps most important this study demonstrates the importance of working to expand on the FEMA supplied HAZUS-MH infrastructure.

Aspects of this study have been briefed at the past two SoCalHUG meetings and the recent 2009 Floodplain Management Association Annual Conference HAZUS-MH panel discussion.
